Happy 100th Birthday, Papa!

100 years ago, an incredible man was born.

There is no knowing me without knowing my Papa.  Any good quality I retain stems from his love and instruction. Any smile that comes across my face was made possible by his showing me how to appreciate life, the people around me and nature itself.

To say he was the love of my life is an understatement. To say that time heals all wounds is a lie. I miss him every moment of every single day. Still, I feel him with me.  I can’t explain it, but then I don’t need to.  It’s between him and me.

Many of you know that on his birthday and the day of his passing, I honor him with “Burgers and Pie”. This was a special tradition that he and I would share when we were just two folks–one young, one young at heart– enjoying a special moment all our own.

I usually invite those I love (who I feel my grandpa would want me to have around me) to share in my celebration of a great man and the single greatest influence of my life.

Now, I know most little girls think their grandfather is the best and I am not doubting yours is spectacular, but  to me, mine was the most incredible, honorable, kind, stoic, wise, loving, fun, hardworking man in the world.

Those who knew him well have confirmed that they share my view. He was a handsome, humble, soft-spoken man with a 6’3 frame and character that resembled that of Gregory Peck.  No wonder the women at the church were so eager to invite us to lunch (something I would not allow–my grandpa).

He sacrificed a lot in order to give me as normal a childhood as our circumstances allowed. I only wish I could have returned the favor and bought him the house with the duck pond I used to promise we’d live in.

Today, I celebrate the 100th anniversary of his debut into the world.  A century later, he’s influencing and bringing people together.  Amazing.

I love you with all of my heart, Papa.  You are in my thoughts, heart and prayers every hour of every day and I am grateful for the honor of being your little “Stink Pot”.

Happy Birthday,

Lefty

  1. Happy Birthday to your Papa! And now I wish I had burger meat thawed instead of fish. I’ll dedicate the gluten free blueberry cobbler in his memory. It isn’t quite pie, but I haven’t quite gotten the hang of making pie crust — much less one with unconventional flour mixtures. ;) Here’s to the memory of a great man who raised an amazing woman!
